LIFE IN SEVEN QUESTIONS

LIFE IN 7 QUESTIONS

Perla Fagundez, CEO, Aerowise charts her business life in seven simple questions.

PERLA FAGUNDEZ is the founder and CEO of Aerowise – an aircraft management, services, trip planning and support company based in Argentina and Uruguay. Aerowise manages aircraft from large cabin Gulfstream jets down to a Cessna 182. Fagundez is passionate about getting more women into business aviation and over 65% of the Aerowise team are female.

How did you get into the business aviation market?

By accident! I grew up in Buenos Aires in Argentina but always wanted to visit England. When I got to the UK, I was searching for my first job and saw a role at ARINC Direct (now part of Rockwell Collins). It was the only position where I had a unique skill to offer – speaking Spanish.

I started as a translator then moved into sales calling European customers. I also worked for the company in Argentina. ARINC Direct had a fantastic team and I am very proud of working there.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I wanted to be an engineer. I always liked technical studies. I went to a technical school and probably would have ended up working in laboratories. My godfather was an engineer and he was a great role model for me. I think this may be why I love working with aircraft.

What advice would you give to your younger self and would you have taken it?

Do not give up. Whatever role you have you always end up facing challenges and difficult times and you need to keep pushing through them. Afterwards you are always more proud of how you got through difficult times than easy wins.

It is a cliché, but when running a business, you are only as a good as the people you work with. Selecting the right people is crucial. We look for people who are passionate about the industry – pilots who love flying, cabin crew who are obsessed with customer service, finance people who are obsessed with detail.

What was your best business decision?

Being fully committed to the industry. Once I realised I loved the industry I completely committed to it. Commitment is so important. Once you say or promise something you must be committed to delivering it. You have to do what you say you are going to do.

We launched with the vision of being transparent and ethical. Everyone in our team knows they have to deliver on that every day.

What was your worst business decision?

In this industry the vast majority of people you deal with are honest and super professional. Sadly, there are some who do not live up to their word or the values that we and our customers hold ourselves to.

Is business aviation in the climb, the cruise or the descent and why?

To me, it is in the descent in terms of value. This is an industry where safety and service have to be at absolutely the top level. There are some companies that seem to be racing to the bottom and devaluing the industry. There is no room for companies like this.

How do you relax?

I read a lot but, to be fair, these are mainly books about business or technology development. Things I want to use for business.

I love dancing. I used to be a ballerina when I was younger. I like all music from classical to rock, via reggae and blues. I particularly love British music. Which, thinking about it, is why I ended up in England. And ended up in business aviation.
