THE GERMAN electric vertical take off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft manufacturer Volocopter has partnered with Paris’ airport authority, Groupe ADP to operate flights in the French capital and its greater region, starting during the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Conducted alongside the French Civil Aviation Authority and Paris region, the city is set to be the first in the world to integrate eVTOL services into its existing public transportation system. Operations in Paris will begin from five vertiports and will grow to cover the whole region over the next decade, says Volocopter. Its VoloCity aircraft, which has capacity for one pilot and one passenger, will be flying at heights below 500m (1,640ft).
Dirk Hoke, CEO of Volocopter, said: “We are counting down the days to making electric air taxis a reality. Together with our French partners, we will take command in decarbonising aviation, slowly but surely.” Volocopter will start with three connection routes and two tourist round-trip flights, with a fleet of several aircraft.
Edward Arkwright, Groupe ADP deputy CEO, added: “All the indicators are green for a successful summer 2024. The challenges are huge, but they are a great source of pride.”
