THE BIG BOUNCE BACK GATHERS PACE
AFTER THE GLOBAL financial crisis, business aviation flights took a decade to climb back to 2008 levels. The bounce back from Covid-19 lockdowns has taken less than 12 months making 2021 a record year. Although the past 12 months has taught us to take nothing for granted, there are also no signs of it ending. We should see even more demand as businesses return to travelling and still locked-down regions re-open.
While it is great news, this sudden rebound is making life tough for operators, FBOs, trip-planners and anyone involved with operating aircraft. You just need to visit a popular airport to see it in action. Both aircraft brokers and charter brokers are worried that there will be a shortage of aircraft for them.
This flurry of activity is also making it harder for people to keep up with the amazing changes that are happening in the industry. The past year has seen record investment in the industry – more than $7bn; Wheels Up and Blade listing; mergers and new launches. Our cover story looks at some of the key themes that are worth watching.
It is a different picture in Asia where operators are still waiting for restrictions to be lifted. Passengers still want to fly privately, but do not want to spend weeks stuck in hotels. We also look at the growth of Bitcoin charters and how technology is changing aircraft maintenance.
This also looks set to be the quarter where the industry gets back together in person. The past 18 months has proven how useful online meetings can be and they will not be going away. But there is something different about meeting in person and we cannot wait until NBAA-BACE and CJI Miami!
